CHICKEN OF THE MONTH

Charlotte

Chicken of the month is Charlotte, the flock’s undisputed #1 team player! She never hesitates to join the ducks for a mid-day quack-nap, or follow Cooper on his training walks, picking dirt/leaves/anything else from his fluffy tail to show her support and cheer him on. If the flock could vote on a high school superlative for Charlotte, she would win “Most liked by everybody!”

Charlotte and her sister, Autumn, are Mystic Onyxs and share a similar appearance; both have black eyes, black combs, black legs, and a beautiful black feather-coat that shimmers with dark green and blue highlights in the sun. However, unlike her sister, Charlotte has five toesies on each foot instead of the normal four! This special quality, called polydactylism, is actually something that she has in common with Cooper, who has six claws on each hind foot. If you look at Charlotte’s left foot in the picture, you will be able to see her back toes form a sort of web, which is exactly how she got her name! Charlotte’s Web! :)

If you want to congratulate Charlotte or just support Buckaroo’s Farm & Flowers, take a look at the Buckaroo’s Starter Pack below! It includes everything you need for an early morning to yourself including local coffee grounds from Powhatan’s one-and-only Rise and Grind Cafe!

All proceeds go to bags of mealworms to spoil the chickens and ducks!

Simple Chickens

Ever since I was little, chickens were my favorite pets. Fast forward thirty years and not much has changed. A lot of us out here are aiming for a simple life. Successful and meaningful, but simple.

Here is my definition of simple…

It’s 5:30 a.m. and it’s too dark to let the chickens out and everyone else in the world seems to still be sleeping. I find my favorite notebook and I already know which coffee mug I want to sip out of this morning. I pour some freshly brewed coffee, sit down next to my kitchen window, and I dream about life… about my goals for that day… about how thankful I am for this early morning to myself… Time goes by and it is just light enough to let the chickens out. I throw out some meal worms, refill their feed, and collect their eggs.

Simple.

….then the sun starts shining and the world wakes up and it is pure chaos! ….until tomorrow morning.

My passion is clearly centered around chickens, but it is also the simple feeling of life that they give me. Over time I have had some ideas come to life and there is nothing more exciting than getting to share those ideas with you! I hope that they can create little moments that are simple for you.
